Welcome, fellow flight simmers, to a review of Active Sky XP, created by HiFi Simulation Technologies. This review will focus on the basic installation and operation of the software, a real-weather enhancement add-on for X-Plane 11.

But first, here is a little background on the HiFi Sim Tech group, from their web site: 'Refining Weather Accuracy and Realism since 2000! Active Sky is a comprehensive weather simulation engine for FSX, P3D and now the X-Plane desktop flight simulator platforms. Over 20 years in development, Active Sky continues its ongoing journey in an ongoing quest to improve the simulated aviation weather experience for everyone. HiFi is comprised of pilots, programmers and artists who share a common passion for aviation, weather and simulation. We strive for the most realistic weather experience possible, always prioritizing function and fidelity above all else. We love what we do and thank all our customers and supporters for enabling us to continue to improve and expand Active Sky!'

Here is the description of the Active Sky XP product, as presented by developer HiFi Simulation Technologies:

'Introducing HiFi's first weather engine for the X-Plane platform... Active Sky XP (ASXP) brings the popular award-winning Active Sky weather engine to the X-Plane platform for the first time. Using a hybrid weather depiction interface through X-Plane 11's weather API, a realistic, high-performance and high-fidelity weather experience is realized.'

As you have read by now, HiFi Sim Tech have been around for quite some time and have refined their product extensively while developing for MSFS and Prepar3D. Now all that expertise has been brought to X-Plane for us all to enjoy.

Currently, ASXP is only available for the Windows platform. My computer setup that I used to test the software is as follows: CPU i7-2600K OC'd 3.9 GHz, 32 GB DDR3 RAM, GPU Gigabyte GTX1070 G1. I have the latest Nvidia drivers, using X-Plane 11.31.

So, how does it all work? Well, let me guide you through my experience of being a newb to Active Sky XP.

Installation

Installation was, for me, a breeze. I honestly don't think I read the installation instructions, I just ran the installer. Of note, you must create an account with HiFi Sim Tech to use this product. It is straightforward for anyone that has similar experience with products requiring a persistent internet connection in order to use them. When installing the product, you have the option to install additional textures - I did not elect to install them as I am minding the size of the installation against my available HDD capacity. With the setup complete (by the way, ASXP has a thorough set of instructions contained in a PDF) it was time to fly!

Operation

You will find two icons on your desktop. The main icon should be obvious, and the secondary icon is for the web application. I was able to open the web application from my desktop in order to check it out, but I was unable to open it on my mobile devices. Contained within the instruction manual are details on how to get the web application operational on your home LAN. It is a bit involved with configuration of your router, opening a specific port in order to allow communication with the ASXP software.

Double clicking on the main icon brings you the following loading screen.

I have elected to set the auto-login feature, because why else would you click on the icon except to load the software.

Once the software loads, you are brought to the above screen, the HOME tab. If you load ASXP before you load X-Plane, the software will indicate it isn't connected to the simulator software by showing text in orange beside the 'connection' status and a broken chain icon in the top bar of the software window. When the simulator is running and connected, you will see the screen as presented above. The instruction manual provides excellent descriptions of the functions contained within the submenus, I highly recommend reading it to get the most out of your experience using ASXP.
